I drew this when I was first really accepting that I had a mental illness. Which mind you took nearly 10 years from the first time I even heard the word "Bipolar" to actually accepting that I might have a. take it seriously and b. that it would involve medication, therapy and huge life changes if I was to remain a functional human being. I don't mean this t-shirt to make light of Bipolar disorder. Quite the opposite in fact. I don't think many people who know of the illness or maybe have a loved one with it truly know just how extreme the shifts in mood, energy and thinking can be for the person experiencing it. It is ridiculous despite how serious it is and few are equipped to truly help that person. When I was first diagnosed way back in 2011 I was told to watch a movie and read a good book while the illness wreaked havoc with my life. Destroying relationships, future prospects in school and work and my own sense of self. So no I don't want to make light of it but I want to draw attention to the fact that it is real and it is serious. Sometimes the most any person can do whether their friend or loved one is in the throes of a manic depressive episode is to talk to them and meet them where they are at. Empathise with them on some level where they know you are there and that they are held and grounded in someway even if they feel them spiralling down or blasting off.
